Understand Cold Stress
The negative effects of extended exposure to cold can be extremely dangerous, here are some warning signs to watch for:
HYPOTHERMIA
One of the first signs of hypothermia is shivering. Hypothermia occurs when the body's temperature drops below 95°F, it's important for outdoor workers to monitor each other for this symptom. Early detection is key, if an employee begins to shiver, they should be taken inside and given a hot meal or drink. In more severe cases, it's advised to call a doctor.
FROSTBITE
For frostbite, look for red, painful, or numb skin that appears gray-yellow or feels waxy. Gently warm the affected area with lukewarm water until the skin returns to its normal color.
TRENCH FOOT
Look for redness, pain, tingling, cramps, blisters, and numbness. These are signs of a cold-related illness caused by prolonged wetness. Remove any wet clothing and treat the affected areas with warm water.

Stay Safe, Warm, and Productive: A Guide to Cold Weather Work Gear
When the temperature drops, it's not enough to just tough it out. At Ritz Safety, we know that having the right gear is crucial for keeping your team safe, warm, and productive on the job. Our selection of cold weather gear is designed to protect workers from head to toe, combining advanced materials with practical design to help you conquer the cold.
The Power of Layers: Dress for Success
The key to staying warm is a layering system that traps heat while wicking away moisture. We recommend a three-part approach:
-
Base Layer: This is your foundation. A moisture-wicking layer worn close to the skin pulls sweat away to prevent you from getting cold.
-
Mid Layer: This is your insulation. A fleece or down-filled mid layer traps body heat, keeping you warm even on the coldest days.
-
Outer Layer: This is your shield. A durable, wind-resistant, and waterproof outer shell protects you from the elements.
Head to Toe Protection
Head and Face
Protecting your head is vital, as a significant amount of body heat can be lost there. Our inventory includes thermal hats, balaclavas, and gaiters made from quick-drying materials. For workers who need head protection, we also offer thermal liners for hard hats and bump caps that provide both warmth and safety.
Hands
Gloves are essential for maintaining dexterity and warmth. Look for gloves with a durable, water-repellent exterior and a waterproof membrane. Dual-zone insulation, with a different type of insulation on the palm versus the back of the hand, offers both warmth and flexibility. We also carry tech-friendly gloves so you don't have to remove them to use a mobile device.
Feet
Your feet are often the first to get cold. We offer high-quality socks, especially those made from merino wool, which provide superior insulation and moisture-wicking properties. For walking on ice and other slippery surfaces, personal ice traction devices like cleats can be attached to work boots to prevent slips and falls.
Don't Forget the Details
Staying safe in the cold goes beyond just clothing. We also provide:
-
Eye Protection: Winter glare from snow and ice can be a hazard. We offer safety glasses and goggles with anti-fog and polarized lenses to ensure clear vision and prevent accidents.
-
Warming Accessories: For extra comfort, consider our hand warmers and foot warmers, perfect for a quick boost of heat when you need it most.
-
Sun Protection: Don't forget sunscreen! UV rays are highly reflective on snow, and using SPF 50 can protect your skin from sun damage.
By equipping your crew with the right gear from Ritz Safety, you're not just providing comfort—you're investing in their safety and productivity throughout the winter season.
